In a recent conversation with Representative Quang Nguyen, a moment of clarity emerged that resonated deeply with me and, I believe, should resonate with all who value the liberties enshrined in our Constitution. Rep. Nguyen, known for his staunch defense of the Second Amendment and individual rights, shared a powerful sentiment: “I’m not here to expand the Second Amendment. I’m here to reclaim what was taken.”
This statement is a poignant reminder of the erosion of freedoms we’ve witnessed over the years. It’s not about seeking more than what was originally intended; it’s about restoring the liberties that have been chipped away by overreaching legislation and regulatory encroachments. As we discussed the legislative session and potential bills for the next session, this theme of reclaiming our rights became a central focus.
The Arizona Citizens Defense League (AzCDL) has been a bulwark against the encroachment on our Second Amendment rights. Since its inception, AzCDL has stood its ground, ensuring that no freedoms are relinquished without a fight. But as we look to the future, it’s clear that merely holding the line is not enough. We must adopt a proactive stance, working not just to defend but to reclaim the freedoms that have been taken from us.
The Path to Reclamation
The path to reclaiming our freedoms is multifaceted and requires a concerted effort from all who cherish liberty. Here are some of the steps we take:
1. Legislative Advocacy: We must continue to support and elect representatives who are committed to restoring our rights. This means engaging in the political process, from voting to lobbying, to ensure that our voices are heard and our rights are prioritized. And we do this well. It’s time to step up and make sure those who want to impair our freedoms do not get elected in the first place.
2. Legal Challenges: Where rights have been infringed upon, we must be prepared to challenge these encroachments in court. Strategic litigation can be an effective tool in overturning unconstitutional laws and setting precedents that protect our liberties. Our alliance with the Second Amendment Foundation and Goldwater Institute is critical. The recent issues with Pima County, City of Flagstaff and City of Phoenix and our responses are examples of this.
3. Education and Awareness: Many individuals are unaware of the rights they’ve lost or the gradual erosion of their freedoms. By educating the public about their constitutional rights and the importance of preserving them, we can build a more informed and vigilant citizenry. Don’t ever have a mindset of “us four and no more” when it comes to this. Every firearm owner in Arizona should be educated on all the issues and statutes here. Go to the range and practice. Read the action alerts from AzCDL and exercise your freedoms.
4. Grassroots Mobilization: There is strength in numbers. By mobilizing like-minded individuals and organizing grassroots campaigns, we can exert significant pressure on policymakers and effect change at the local, state, and national levels. I fight for your rights, liberties and freedoms every day at the state and local levels. We go to DC and lobby on the Hill for Arizonans. When I walk into a meeting and let the people at the table know I represent AzCDL, they take notice. I would love to be able to say, “I represent the 250,000 members of AzCDL”. The more we mobilize, the more we can reclaim. Sign up for the RTS System, send emails to your legislators, volunteer at membership recruiting events and get to know your elected officials.
5. Alliance Building: Collaborating with other organizations and groups that share our commitment to liberty can amplify our efforts. By forming alliances and working together, we can present a united front in the battle to reclaim our freedoms. Our Board of Directors have positioned our organization as one that others want to build an alliance with. Working with the ASRPA, NRA/ILA, GOA, 2AF, etc. on strategic issues just expands our influence.
Rep. Nguyen’s words serve as a clarion call for all who value freedom and the principles upon which our nation was founded. It’s time to shift our focus from merely defending our rights to actively reclaiming them. AzCDL has been a steadfast defender of our Second Amendment rights, but the battle for liberty extends beyond any single amendment. As we move forward, let us embrace the spirit of reclamation, working tirelessly to restore the freedoms that have been taken and ensuring that the torch of liberty burns brightly for generations to come.
Let freedom ring!
